Working in and with the Dalit Women’s Collective – a Design Idea by Students

Our engagement with the site at Singareni Colony would hardly have been possible without the unequivocal support of the Dalit Women’s Collective (DWC), that is embedded in the location. Sujatha Surepally, the Director of DWC, has many dreams for her constituents, and at the same time, for the growth of DWC. For instance, DWC was operating out of a rented premise in the colony and was always at the risk of eviction. Sujatha made plans to acquire a small piece of land right there and build out a new facility.

Much of the work of 3 dimensional documentation of buildings was carried out by students of architecture through a 4-week long fellowship, that was anchored at DWC. Inevitably, they slowly got engaged with DWC, its students and tutors. There were many days spent playing with the kids who come to DWC, thus enabling a positive and fun atmosphere while the data collection work was going on. Towards the end of the engagement, it was proposed that some students take up the task of designing the new facility of DWC at Singareni Colony. The pdf embedded below shows the results of this design exercise.
